This essay was written for the project “House of wind and light” 

	
この論考はプロジェクト「光と風が通る家」で書き起こしたものです。


We
envisioned a future house.


A
house reflects its social context and is planned to meet values, customs, and
lifestyles of the time. To think about a future house is to imagine future
society and lifestyles.


This apartment was built in 1979 based on a
typical family apartment plan in Japan. Our clients wanted to have a flexible
living environment allowing for various activities such as inviting guests and
working. 


A typical apartment plan centered around a
space combining a dining room and kitchen, which started 40 years ago in Japan,
is no longer effective and needs to be updated to meet diverse demands of
today's society.


In this project, we intend to deconstruct a
typical apartment based on a "room" and reconstruct it as a
"place." Our focus was on how to incorporate the surrounding
environment and envision lifestyles in the new era. 


The space should be flexible to respond to
changes in family structure and the key is to provide some "margin"
allowing for possible changes in the future. An open-floor space provides a
sufficient "margin" and furniture can be effectively used to utilize
the "margin." In this way, we can propose unique solutions to meet
various demands of clients. 


By
exploring a future house, we acknowledged unmeasurable values of spaces that
cannot be evaluated based on conventional standards such as the floor area or
the price per unit area. Deconstruction/reconstruction of evaluation criteria
is a crucial factor in evolution of houses.


このプロジェクトでは、「未来の住宅」について考えている。


住宅とは本来、社会環境を色濃く反映し、その時代の価値観、振る舞い、生活によって部屋や動線が構成されている。住宅の変化で大きな部分としては、日本の場合、「畳での生活→椅子での生活」に変わったように、ライフスタイルの変化＝住まいの進化であると言える。つまり、未来の家を想像するということは未来の社会や暮らしを想像するということと同義ではないかと思う。


本物件は1979年に建てられており、日本における典型的な核家族向け３LDKの間取り構成であった。施主は夫婦の２人暮らしであり、ゲストを呼んで食事を楽しんだり、家で仕事をしたりといった、現代の多様化したライフスタイルに適した自由な暮らし方を求めていた。


確かに、戦後の高度経済成長期における住宅供給の波に駆られて標準化された間取りや様式は、明らかにその当時の暮らしや文化を反映しており、寝食を分離することで新しい時代を迎えたことは間違いないだろう。しかしながら、家族像や働き方、テクノロジーが加速しながら変化している現代社会の中で、住宅の間取りが新陳代謝していないというこの状況は、やはり一つの社会的な課題であると感じている。


そこで、当プロジェクトではこれまで暮らし方を規定してきた「部屋」を解体して「場所」として再構築することを試みている。改修プロジェクトでありながら、周辺環境の要素を取り込むことを第一義に考え、既存建物との共生を維持し、新しい時代に則した暮らし方を想像できるかどうかが課題となった。


家族像が変化していくということは、空間自体が規定されておらず、柔軟であることが必要と考えた。そのためには、未来の暮らしの変化に合わせた「余白」を設計しておくことが重要ではないだろうか。ワンルームという間取りにはそのような魅力があり、家具にはそのような「余白」を活かせるポテンシャルがある。様々な形状の家具を検討する中で、拡張していった結果部屋のようになった案もあれば、一体化せずに分散化した家具となった案もある。家族構成の変化など将来的にそのような付加的な場所が出来上がることも想定した上で、今回はできるだけ大きな居住スペースが取れるような案を採用した。この考え方によると、様々なライフスタイルを抱える様々な世代のクライアントに対して、同じコンセプトの中でそれぞれユニークな回答を導き出せるといった可能性に満ちている。


このような新しいライフスタイルに適した「未来の住宅」を探っていくと、床面積や坪単価と言った規定の評価基準では測れない空間の豊かさに気づく。気積がものすごく大きいとか、実際に体感して初めてわかる空間の質のことである。このように、従来からある評価軸に変化が生まれるような空間を作り続けていくことも、住宅が進化していくためには非常に重要である。

「同じ空間で働く」ということ

This essay was written for the project “Office with a patio” この論考はプロジェクト「中庭のあるオフィス」で書き起こしたものです。


In the modern world today, we often talk about the
diversification of work style. Many people do not have fixed seats anymore and
work from home, cafe or anywhere they like in the ways they like. Work style as
such could bring great imagination for individuals and link to creative ideas
or productive business plans. However, as for communication in the production
process, it is also important that imaginations are born through the sessions
in a physical place.


In this project, we are rethinking about modern working
scenes by returning once again to the origin - "working in the same
space". Rather than creating a cafe-like space where people spend a lot
time in one place, we wanted to come up with a more proactive place where more
activities and communication are generated, so that this place and people
themselves will naturally become more educated.


We are not trying to impress our designs but to bring
out the imagination of the users. Especially when it is not clear what the
client wants, we make sure to start from understanding their agendas and then
get to ‘what will happen if necessary functions are aligned in the most
efficient way’. By managing everything rationally and logically, and not making
things too difficult, only the real necessary things will be exposed. Moreover,
with the margin obtained by doing so, we let it be as it is without a specific
function.


 The space of this margin came to be called the
“courtyard” by the client themselves. They also started discussing soon after
on how this space should be utilized or how they want to make the best use of
this space from then onwards. We integrate that kind of motivation through all
our design process.


Every detail is established by one simple rule. That
rule is the grid of the existing system ceiling. By following the existing grid
completely, a space that is very reasonable, efficient and cost-effective will
be established. In the courtyard, all the pitches are controlled by the
stainless steel corrugated sheet, so the joints such as the closing of doors
and the aisles are extremely simple and tense. This wall is made of an exterior
material of building, and by utilizing this material we were able to give the
feeling of outside garden inside. The delicate and smooth surface reflects
everything that exist in the room and creates a refined space in the center of
the office.


This space could be a very meaningful space depending
on how the users utilize it. Creating such an initiative, is the "power of
design" that we aim for. It can be said that this initiative is born
precisely because we are being particular about "working in the same
space".


A completion is the beginning for architecture and
interior design. 
 

We believe that architecture can be pushed forward by
its users and the users themselves also can learn from the architecture as
well. We hope that this mutual interaction of such ‘users’ and ‘margin’ will
lead to a work style of the new age.


現代では働き方が多様化してきています。会社では多くの人が固定の席を持たず、フリーアドレスで仕事をしたり、カフェで仕事をしたり、様々な場所で様々な働き方をしています。そのような働き方はイマジネーションを豊かにし、クリエイティブなアイディアや、生産的なビジネスプランに結びついたりしています。しかしながら、プロダクションプロセスにおけるコミュニケーションについては、個人のイマジネーションだけでなく、物理的な場所から生まれるセッションによって大きなドライヴがかかることも大事なことの一つです。


このプロジェクトでは様々な働き方が許容されている現代のワークシーンにおいて、今一度立ち戻って「同じ空間で働く」ということについて考え直しています。近年増えてきているオフィス内のカフェのような滞在型の場所を作るのではなく、もっと意図的にアクティブな場所を作ることで、活動やコミュニケーションが活発になり、働いている人達自身が成長し、その空間を育てていくことを目指しています。


私たちは自分たちのデザインを押し付けるのではなく、使い手のイマジネーションを引き出すことを目指しています。クライアント自身が何をしたいのか明確でない時は特に、彼らが本当に必要としているものを明確に整理し、実際の必要機能を最も効率よく配置した場合に何が起こるか、というところからスタートしています。難しいことはせず、合理的に、理論的に整理することで本当な必要なものだけが表出される。そうすることで得た余白の空間を、このプロジェクトではボーナスのようなものとしてそのまま機能を持たせずに提供しています。機能を持たせない空間を意図的にデザインしているとも言えます。


&#38;nbsp;この余白の空間は、クライアント自身によって中庭と呼ばれるようになりました。中庭と呼ばれるようになってからはこの空間をどのように使うか、どうやって生かして生きたいかなど、彼ら自身から積極的な議論が生まれました。


 これはすでにこの空間が使い手のものになって、育て始めた瞬間です。すべてのデザインプロセスを通して私たちはそのモチベーションをデザインしているのです。


あらゆるディテールは一つの単純なルールによって成立しています。そのルールとは既存のシステム天井のグリッドです。既成のグリッドを完全に踏襲することで、非常に合理的で効率的でコストパフォーマンスの良い空間が立ち上がります。また、中庭においては壁面仕上げであるステンレスの波板によって、全てのピッチがコントロールされているため、扉や通路の取り合いなどその納まりは非常にシンプルで緊張感のあるたたずまいとなっています。


この壁面は建築の外装材で製作されており、内部にある外部の庭を演出しています。また繊細でなめらかな表情は、そこにいる人々、家具、植物、光などあらゆるものを写り込ませ、オフィスの中心に洗練された空間を作り出しています。


この空間は、使い手の工夫次第で生かされる場所です。それによって、使い手自身が、工夫し、利用し、育てていく。そのような主体性を生み出すこと自体が、僕たちが目指している「デザインの力」です。そしてそれは、「同じ空間で働く」ということにこだわるからこそ生まれる主体性とも言えます。
 

建築やインテリアデザインは、完成した時が始まりです。


その建築は使い手それぞれによって大きく成長し、また使い手自身も大きく成長させてくれるのではないでしょうか。そんな「使い手」と「余白」の成長によって、新たな時代のオフィスでの働き方・在り方へと繋がるのではないだろうかと期待しています。

This essay was written for the project “T - Residence” この論考はプロジェクト「T邸」で書き起こしたものです。


The idea of a
“Tokyo Apartment” is typically known to be units too small for most western
standards but appealing as cozy spaces for locals, where as “high-rise
Residence” is a modern take on the Tokyo Apartment to present a new style.
Therefore, the project was titled “Tokyo Residence” – as a marketed development
concept. The notion of height being the ultimate driver of apartments value is
challenged through personalization.


Through relaxation
of regulations in 1997 the high-rise residence was introduced and did not take
long until it was mass produced in Japan. However, the spatial design has not
seen to change for 10 years ago and it has not kept up with the trends nor the
times.&#38;nbsp; Therefore, it is expected that
the interior of most residence will be outdated in masses very soon and it
becomes more important to think about renovating old apartments to provide a
contemporary home through personalization. By emphasizing on the value of
personalization, we can drive not only old apartments to rethink its value but
also new apartments.


As a result, this
particular project looks at “Re-ceiling” to provide an alternative to high
driven value of apartments. A way in which the pure ceiling that connects
external with the internal becomes a versatile response to the issue.
 
In
the near future, how are we to protect the quality of spaces for residents as
developers commercialize these types of dwellings. As architects we should be
mindful of the issues that may take place.


日本では多くの場合アパートの改修は築30〜50年前後の物件が対象で、今ではその行為自体をリノベーションと呼んでいる。これは本来の用途や機能の変更という意味で使われているのではなく、古くなったものを改修することで付加価値をつけて再利用するという意味で浸透しているのだろう。また、“Tokyo Apartment”とは多くの場合東京における狭小居住空間を指し、欧米人には信じられないほどの小さな空間にとても豊かな居住域を形成をしていることが魅力的と捉えられている。それに対し、タワーマンションは近代都市の象徴とも言え、今では“Tokyo Apartment”の新しいカタチと言えるほど東京らしさを表していると感じている。ここではその新しいカタチのことを“Tokyo Residence”(パッケージ化された不動産商品)と名付けた。高いところに住むことだけが目的になってしまっている“タワーに住む”という行為に対して、パーソナライズしていくことでその価値を飛躍させる。リノベーションの進化系としての“パーソナライゼーション”の重要性について考えてみた。

日本では容積緩和などの建築基準法が改正された２２年ほど前からタワーマンションが登場し、1997年ごろから都心に次々と建設され始めた。しかしながらその当時のトレンドでデザインされてきた内部空間は、１０年以上経過した時点で時代の変化に対応できない。今後これらのタワーマンションの中身だけが衰退していくスピードはどんどん加速していくだろう。


つまり、このようなタワーマンションにおける“パーソナライゼーション”という行為の需要が今後増えていくのは明らかである。これまでのように築数十年経過したアパートだけが改修の対象ではなく、これからはこのような新築のレジデンスですら改修してその良さを飛躍させていくことがとても重要になってくると考えている。


そして、その一つの答えとして今回は &#38;nbsp;“Re-ceiling”を提案した。タワーマンションが上へ上へと天に向かって上昇していく居住空間だという事実を前提として考えると、ピュアな天井面を外部空間と内部空間の接続装置としてインストールすることは汎用性のある一つの回答だと考えている。


近い将来、このような匿名性の強い空間を商品とする不動産ビジネスがさらに展開していく中で、私たちは住人（消費者）のライフクオリティをどのように守っていくことができるのか。これは住み手にとってとても大事な権利であるとともに、私たち建築家が寄り添って解決すべき問題だと捉えている。

広島県三原市大和町の蔵宗という山奥にある築１５０年の農家形式の民家の改修である。


農家形式とは言っても原型が農家型であり、現在の姿は地元の大工が増改築を繰り返してきた継ぎ接ぎだらけの建築家なき建築である。


ちなみにここは、義父の実家である。つまり妻の祖父母が暮らした家である。大往生の末、近年他界してしまった祖父母の実家を残すのか、取り壊すのか、はたまた建て直すのかというところからのスタートであった。


施主は義父だが、これからこの家を使っていく妻や義妹が直接のクライアントとなる。


彼女たちにとっては小さい頃からの祖父母との思い出が残る家を新しい家族とともに引き継いでいきたいということ、祖父が好きであった縁側を生かしたいということ、そして天井で閉じられた暗い家は明るくしてほしいという要望があった。既存家屋は構造的根拠のない小屋組であったり、手を加えて改修すること自体、かなりの時間と労力を割くことになると考え、母屋を取り壊して新築とする前提で計画を始めたが、やはり思い出を残すという課題が、大きく引っかかることとなった。プランや形式を引き継ぐ形で新築にしたり、小屋組は残して遣り替えることだったり、使える部材のみ転用することでも思い出の引き継ぎは事実上は可能かもしれない。しかし改修においては机上理論ではなくあくまでその実体性が重要となる。この場所で祖父母が暮らしていた空気感であったり、特にその室内空間が持っている神聖さやにおいというものを再現するのは難しい。むしろ再現しようとしている時点では全く別のものを再構築しようとしていることに気がついた。都会で育つ新しい世代がこうした環境で古き良き日本の住宅を体験していくことの重要性を考えて、この150歳以上の家に丁寧に寄り添いながら「新しい使われ方」に合わせて改修するという形でプロジェクトが進むこととなった。


そこで、長い年月の中で増改築が繰り返されてきた軸組（工法的にも寸法的にも根拠のない）を改めて眺めていると、母屋だけでなく、使わなくなった納屋や蔵との連続性や農家的な動線を感じるようになった。そう、もともとここは農家なのである。外部から連続するように三和土（タタキ）は台所まで締め固められていた。納屋の土間には農具があり、建具は入っていなかった。裏庭にはもともと牛や鶏を飼っていて、自然のコンポストもある。そうやって全体を眺めていると、次第に意識が周辺の大自然へとシフトしていき、全体の環境の中に、ポツンと軸組が突き刺さって自立した状態を作り出していることに魅力を感じた。あるようでない敷地境界線や等高線が意識の中から消えていき、いかにのびのびと、敷地にある建物をつなげて広がっていくか。いかにさりげなくランドスケープの一部となるような改修ができるかどうかというところへ主題が収束していった。


建物の内外をつなげるとか、敷地の内外をつなげるというけれど、ランドスケープならそれができる。だから、この建物が環境の一部となるような設計ができないかと考えた。


環境の一部として住宅を機能させるためには同時に厳しい自然環境に耐えうる性能を担保することも重要である。最終的には通り土間を引き入れることで減築しつつ、石床、三和土（タタキ）、縁側を要素に用いて既存の３つの建物を小規模かつ別の３つのかたまりとして再構築した。異なる空間の質を持ち込むことで外部環境と、内部環境が、解放しながら混じり合う。大きな屋根の下で建物単位を分割したことで厳しい自然環境から守りやすくもしている。「新しい使われ方」を意識しながら構造のジェネレーションを尊重し、これからの世代を守る新規構造部材や転用部材を慎重に決定した。石の間・土の間・木の間と名付けたこの新しい3つのかたまりは、通り土間や石や木について、素材の存在や配置や形、それが敷地全体に生み出す重力やバランスを考えながらスケールやディテールを丁寧に設計している。庭を作るように各かたまりの関係性を整理し、今まで使われていなかった母屋以外の建物も広々と使えるようにのびのびとした抜けを作っていった。


2018年に始まったこのプロジェクトでは、設計中に時代が大きく変わった。社会的変化と家族構成の変化に応じて、「新しい使われ方」自体も大きく変化した。そんな中で、環境建築としての農家再考と、作庭するように設計していくことにこれからの時代の可能性を感じている。場所の声や使われる建築の身体を想像し、ヴァナキュラーな気配を潜ませることで、この地に根を張ってこれからもこの場所に立ち続ける建築になっていくことを願っている。

Office Shogo Onodera (OSO) is an Architecture &#38;amp; Design office based in Tokyo. Founder, Shogo Onodera, studied architecture at Hosei University in Tokyo. In 2010, after working at several types of design offices, he joined SANAA( Architectural design firm run by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa). With over 10 years' experience as an architect, he has built a diverse design base with leadership roles for developing and executing projects around the world. In 2018, he established Office Shogo Onodera. In 2022, OSO Research was established. In collaboration with external members such as artists and academics, they are engaged in various research, projects, and expression activities to realize transitions toward the restoration of the global environment along with the development of architecture and culture.


In 2025, due to the relocation of the office, OSO RESEARCH SPACE (OSOS オソス) was established. OSOS is an experimental venue for OSO, an architectural firm, and for OSO Research, a cross-disciplinary collective. 
Conceived as an “undefined void”, this space will be opened up to the public in various forms. Primarily a place for engaging with the local community, we envision it becoming a cultural focal point that transcends the realms of architecture, art, digital media, culinary arts and environmental actions. It will serve as a testbed for a place-making process centred around a cultural axis.&#38;nbsp;We are concocting a diverse range of activities and a few little tricks to enable OSOS to become a thinking hub for the community. 


小野寺匠吾建築設計事務所 [ OSO / オソ ] は東京に拠点を置き、公共案件をはじめ地域創生、住宅設計、民家改修、リノベーション、商業店舗、オフィス、家具デザインまで国内外問わず幅広い分野で活動している事務所 。 EXPO2025 大阪・関西万博のシグネチャーパビリオンの設計担当を機に2022年より [ OSO Research / オソリサーチ ] を発足。アーティストや学識者などの外部メンバーと協働し 、人類や都市の発展とともに地球環境が回復に向かうトランジションを実現するための様々な研究・プロジェクト・表現活動に取り組んでいる。CIFER大阪湾環境再生研究コンソーシアム賛助会員。沖縄県豊見城市地先海の利活用協議会サポートメンバー。
2025年4月、設計事務所の移転を機に東京都目黒区の東横線学芸大学駅から徒歩5分の場所に 「OSO Research Space / オソリサーチスペース」を開設。OSO Researchが活動理念のひとつとして掲げる「Social Engagement / ソーシャルエンゲージメント」の実践のための場所として、大きなキッチンと白い壁があるだけの「機能のない余白」を街やコミュニティに解放する。建築設計事務所としてどのように街に関わっていく事ができるかというリサーチ・実験的な活動のための場所とする。OSOのプロジェクト展示や国内外の建築家の展示・建築に関するテーマ展をはじめ、アーティストの個展やテーマ展、食やワインのポップアップ、様々なワークショップ、個人や企業の展示会、トークショーやイベントをOSO Researchがキュレーション・開催することで、「文化的発信を軸とした街づくり＝Place-making」を試みている。

After graduating from university, Shogo Onodera gained work experience at a design firm in Tokyo. He then moved to Paris and worked as a freelancer. In 2010, he spent eight years working in architectural design as part of SANAA, led by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. His work includes large-scale projects such as “La Samaritaine” in Paris (commercial complex produced by LVMH) and the high-rise Shanghai Financial Center, as well as the planning of a hotel on Naoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, and numerous other projects and competitions both in Japan and abroad. Leveraging his more than 10 years of experience, he founded OSO in 2018. He was chosen as the designer of "LIVE EARTH JOURNEY," the Signature Pavilion for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo.
代表の小野寺匠吾は大学卒業後、国内のデザインファームで実務経験を積んだのちパリに移住。フリーランスとして活動した後、2010年より妹島和世氏と西沢立衛氏率いるSANAAの一員として、8年間建築設計に従事。パリの老舗百貨店〈ラ・サマリテーヌ〉の新築・改修プロジェクトや、高層ビルの〈上海金融センター〉といった大規模プロジェクトをはじめ、香川県直島の宿泊施設の計画やその他国内外のプロジェクト・コンペティションに多数参加。10年以上の経験を活かし、2018年に独立。Dezeen Award 2018・2024、FRAME AWARD 2019、ひろしま住まいづくりコンクール2021、DFA Design for Asia 2022などを受賞。2025年大阪・関西万博シグネチャーパビリオン「いのちめぐる冒険」設計者。

Her first key design role was for the 2012 London Olympics, working on temporary stadia, pavilions and the media centre, as well as the masterplan. She then worked at SANAA in Tokyo, working across national and international projects. Back in London, she began to specialise in residential architecture, exploring local materiality and integrating sustainable design. She continued to design and deliver large developments as a Senior Architect at a cross-disciplinary firm Vabel, covering roles of design architect and project manager, whilst assisting construction management. As of 2022, she relocated to rural Kyoto to delve into re-activation of regional communities and explore place-making process, and joined the team of OSO Research.

米国·日本·英国の3カ国で育ち、ケンブリッジ大学卒業後はロンドンと東京で建築界でのキャリアを積んできた。初めてデザインで携わったのは2012年ロンドン·オリンピックで、仮設競技場とパビリオン、メディアセンターの設計から、開催中とレガシーの都市開発マスタープランに関わる。その後日本に移りSANAAでインターン。ロンドンに戻って修士号を取得してからは住宅建築を主に担当。地域のマテリアルの探求や環境的持続性を考えたデザインを積極的に取り込むようになる。そして大規模なプロジェクトを設計から施工まで管理し始め、多分野的に開発を繰り広げるVabelではシニア·アーキテクトとして、設計者とプロジェクトマネージャーの役割を担いながら施工現場監修にも関わる。食と農の未来を考えた果てに2022年に京都府京丹後市に移住し、農業インターンをしながらコミュニティハブで食堂を回し、他イベントを開催。その取り組みを基にOSO Researchにジョイン。2023年OSOに加入。2025年からOSOパートナーアーキテクト。

House in Kuramune /&#38;nbsp;蔵宗の住宅（広島県三原市）
We operate three spaces that can be used for galleries, exhibitions, pop-ups, workshops, and photo studios.
Two studios with large kitchens located within a five-minute walk from Gakugeidaigaku Station on the Toyoko Line in Meguro, Tokyo, and one studio located in a renovated old Japanese house in the mountains near Hiroshima Airport.

東京都目黒区の東横線学芸大学駅から徒歩5分内に大きなキッチンを備えた２つのスタジオ、広島空港からほど近い山間部に古民家改修をしたスタジオが１つあります。

	◽️ OSO Researchとは？


OSO Research は小野寺匠吾建築設計事務所（Office Shogo Onodera &#124; OSO ) の建築設計プロジェクトの中で、並走または独走してリサーチ·実験·協議·マネジメントなどを進め、常に設計とオーバーラップしながらコンセプトやデザインを高めていくチームである。メンバー構成は建築家だけでなく、リサーチャー·アーティスト·プロジェクトマネージャー·翻訳者など様々なフィールドでキャリアを持ってきた人たちの集まりとなっている。


ここ数年の設計活動の中で、環境的な解決方法の模索 / データ収集のリサーチ/ エビデンス取得のための実験 / 実装のための協議·調整など、現代および未来に求められている価値の質をアウトプットするためには、従来の設計業務の範疇だけでは到底カバーできないほどの活動が業務として必要になってきている。またその解決方法は建築だけでなく、環境·アート·デジタルなど領域を横断しての検討や実装が必要となってきたと言える。


OSO では2021 年半ばに関西·大阪万博2025 のシグネチャーパビリオン「いのちめぐる冒険」の設計を担当したことをきっかけに、2022 年のはじめにOSO リサーチを発足。パビリオンのための環境的なコンセプトの創出やサスティナブルマテリアルの開発、さらには展示計画の設計にいたるまでの活動を、OSO およびOSO Research で行い、建築の設計を行いながら、各種協議、取材、リサーチ、実験などを行ってきている。


そして発足から３年ほど経った今、万博を始め様々な案件からスピンオフしたプロジェクト、設計案件のためのリサーチや実証のために始まったプロジェクトがいくつか立ち上がってきている。ここでいうスピンオフとは主に、設計活動だけでは抱えきれなくなった大きなテーマや、設計するために押さえておかなくてはいけない課題を解決するために、OSO からスピンオフしてOSOResearch で抱えるようになった案件などをいう。すなわちここでの活動はもちろん設計活動にダイレクトに反映されるし、設計だけじゃないゴールを持って建築以外の多種多様なアウトプットを可能としている。


What is OSO Research？


At OSO Research, the team works as its own entity or alongside the projects run by Office Shogo Onodera / OSO to drive the research, experiments, discussions and management, to give depth and integrity to concepts and designs, whilst further developing architectural or any required technical details. The members are not just architects - we are a collective of people who have built up their careers in various fields, such as researchers, artists, project managers and translators.


In the past few years, it became more and more apparent that there is a vast amount of work outside the usual realms of architectural design. In order to produce valuable outputs that are relevant today and in the future, we need to search for potential environmentally-conscious solutions, research to collect data, carry out experiments to build an evidence-based case, and continue to discuss or co-ordinate towards implementations of such projects. These solutions have also increasingly needed to be considered or manifested beyond architecture, crossing environmental, art and digital boundaries.


OSO Research was launched at the start of 2022, after being given the role to design the signature pavilion in the previous year for Osaka Expo 2025 in Japan. From the creation of environmental concepts, development of sustainable materials, and even to the exhibition curation, OSO Research undertook the works with OSO, holding numerous debates and interviews, carrying out research and conducting experiments, whilst progressing with architectural design.


Coming to almost 3 years since its launch, we have been able to build up a portfolio of spin-off projects that were born out of numerous schemes including the Expo, as well as ones that began as research and demonstrations for project proposals. We felt that now was a good time to recollect our thoughts and share our missions. By “spin-offs”, we mainly refer to the projects that have stemmed from OSO and extended to OSO Research in order to resolve major themes that are beyond architectural design or issues that needed to be addressed for the design. It means that the work is reflected directly in the design process, and allows a huge variety of outputs beyond architecture without being bound by the goal to design.
